Vaginoplasty

What Is it?

After childbirth, many women experience laxity in their pelvic muscles and tissues due to the physical trauma of delivery. The vagina typically heals and returns to a more “normal” size, but often fails to return to its pre-pregnancy diameter.

As a result, many women report decreased sensation and diminished sexual satisfaction during intercourse, commonly due to a lack of friction. While Kegel exercises can help, they rarely succeed in restoring vaginal tightness. Vaginoplasty surgery can help.

A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue and brings the damaged vaginal muscles surrounding the opening together to tighten the area and restore the vagina to a more youthful diameter.

A non-surgical alternative to a vaginoplasty is the CO2RE Intima treatment.

What CAN I EXPECT?

While a vaginoplasty can be done under local anesthesia, many patients opt for general anesthesia.

After determining the amount of tightening to be done, Dr. Falguni Patel marks a pie-shape wedge of extra skin to be removed from inside the vagina. Beneath the skin, she uses strong sutures to tighten the vaginal tissues.

Once the vaginal canal is tightened, she sutures the mucosal skin closed and removes any external skin that protrudes to create a more aesthetically-pleasing appearance.

Patients may need 1–2 weeks of downtime to recover, and may feel some pain for the first few days after the procedure. We recommend avoiding sexual intercourse for at least eight weeks.

The vaginoplasty procedure typically results in a tighter vaginal canal and enhanced sexual satisfaction.

Perineoplasty

What Is It?

The perineum is the band of tissue between the vagina and the rectum. Childbirth can tear the perineal tissue, often leading to scars, a disfigured perineum, or even vaginal looseness. Excess weight can also stretch and damage the muscles of the perineum.

A perineoplasty—which is typically done in conjunction with a vaginoplasty—rebuilds the muscles and resurfaces the tissue to tighten the vaginal opening and correct any damage to the perineum.

What Can I Expect?

Perineoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. The surgery usually takes 30–45 minutes.

Dr. Falguni Patel will make a V-shaped incision in the posterior wall of the vagina and remove any existing scar tissue. She then brings together the underlying muscle and tissue, and closes the incision with sutures.

There is a post-procedure recovery time of about an hour, after which the patient is free to return home. Most patients can return to work within a few days, and medication will be prescribed to help deal with any pain. Normal activity can be resumed in about four weeks, although we recommend abstaining from sexual intercourse for six weeks.

The perineoplasty procedure restores the normal function and appearance of the perineum, improves self-confidence, and helps renew sexual satisfaction.

Hymenoplasty

What Is It?

The hymen is a thin membrane that partially closes the opening of the vagina, which is typically torn when a woman has sexual intercourse for the first time. It is extremely common, however, for the hymen to tear early in life due to reasons other than intercourse, such as heavy lifting, riding a bicycle, or even falling.

In some cultures, an intact hymen is regarded as proof of a young woman’s virginity. In such cultures, a torn hymen can negatively affect a woman’s marriage prospects, her reputation, and her life. In these cases, a woman might desire to have her hymen surgically repaired.

A hymenoplasty is a simple and safe, 30-minute procedure that repairs a torn hymen.

Dr. Falguni Patel and her medical staff are extremely sensitive to women who may be undergoing this procedure due to cultural or social reasons.

What Can I Expect?

The hymenoplasty procedure is performed in-office using general or local anesthesia.

Dr. Falguni Patel uses dissolvable stitches to carefully reconnect the skin membrane that once partially covered the vaginal opening.

Afterward, the patient can return to work in a day or two, with complete healing taking approximately 6–8 weeks.

What Do I Need to Do to Prepare?

As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, preparation and recovery can vary by patient. Every detail of your surgery—including preparation and post-surgical recovery recommendations—are always determined on an individual basis after careful consultation and a thorough physical examination with Dr. Falguni Patel.

The length of time required for the surgery, and to see results from it, will also vary depending on the patient and the combination of procedures you undergo.

Our entire staff is here to make your procedure go as smoothly and comfortably as possible. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the staff and Dr. Falguni Patel and then taken into one of our pre-op rooms. Dr. Patel will again go over the surgery and review any last questions you may have.

The surgery will be performed in our state-of-the-art, OSHA-certified procedure suite. Most of our patients are awake and under light sedation, but we do have an anesthesiologist on staff if necessary. A personal surgical assistant will be present to take care of all your needs before, during, and after your procedure.

Afterward, you can relax comfortably in our recovery room until you are ready to return home.
