About Hymenoplasty

Hymenoplasty is a common cosmetic and gynecological surgery that aims to reconstruct a torn hymen within the vagina for cultural or personal reasons.

The hymen is a thin membrane that partially closes the opening of the vagina, which is typically torn when a woman has sexual intercourse for the first time. It is extremely common, however, for the hymen to tear early in life due to reasons other than intercourse, such as heavy lifting, riding a bicycle, or even falling.

In some cultures, an intact hymen is regarded as proof of a young woman’s virginity. In such cultures, a torn hymen can negatively affect a woman’s marriage prospects, her reputation, and her life. In these cases, a woman might desire to have her hymen surgically repaired.

Dr. Falguni Patel carefully discusses your treatment options and goals to perform the hymenoplasty in NJ without discomfort or complications.

WHAT DOES A HYMENOPLASTY DO?

Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure that reconstructs or repairs a torn or damaged hymen, i.e., the small tissue covering the vaginal canal. Traditionally, the hymen has been viewed as a signifier of virginity or purity, but it can be broken in various ways, such as tampon usage, horseback riding, and more.

Expectations

Our hymenoplasty in NJ is a safe procedure with negligible risks of complications, especially in Dr. Patel’s talented hands. The major risks associated with hymenoplasty include adverse reactions to anesthesia, heavy bleeding, or infections. However, we take all the necessary precautions to avoid these risks.

Dr. Patel conducts thorough allergy tests to ensure the local anesthesia is safe for you. She also provides antibiotics and medications that minimize the risk of infections. However, if you experience heavy bleeding (mild bleeding is normal and expected), you must contact your surgeon immediately.

As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, preparation and recovery can vary by patient. Every detail of your surgery—including preparation and post-surgical recovery recommendations—are always determined on an individual basis after careful consultation and a thorough physical examination with Dr. Falguni Patel.

The length of time required for the surgery, and to see results from it, will also vary depending on the patient and the combination of procedures you undergo.

Our entire staff is here to make your procedure go as smoothly and comfortably as possible. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the staff and Dr. Falguni Patel and then taken into one of our pre-op rooms. Dr. Patel will again go over the surgery and review any last questions you may have.

The Procedure at Work

WHO IS IT FOR?
There’s no cosmetic or medical necessity for a hymenoplasty. However, women often undergo this procedure for various personal or cultural reasons. In some cultures, women prefer to keep their hymen intact for marriage. A hymenoplasty may also help some women cope with the trauma of sexual assault or rape. The reasons to undergo this procedure are completely personal.
A hymenoplasty is a simple and safe, 30-minute procedure that repairs a torn hymen.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE LIKE?

The hymenoplasty in NJ, is performed as an in-office and outpatient procedure within our OSHA-certified surgical suite. Dr. Patel administers local anesthesia to numb the area, but you’re awake throughout the procedure. If you’re feeling anxious, the surgeon may recommend sedation or general anesthesia, but most women prefer local anesthesia.

During the procedure, the surgeon gently stitches the torn hymen tissues back in place, leaving only a small hole for the vaginal opening. However, if the patient doesn’t have sufficient skin around the hymen, the surgeon may take skin tissues from the surrounding region and reconstruct a new hymen.

Regardless of the technique used, there’s no way to distinguish the newly-formed hymen from the original hymen. Furthermore, Dr. Patel also reroutes blood supply to the newly-formed tissues to ensure bleeding during intercourse once the hymen breaks again. As such, the procedure restores your hymen completely.

The hymenoplasty surgery lasts 1 to 2 hours, followed by a short recovery process. Most women can resume their daily activities and work in 1 or 2 days, but the total recovery duration lasts more than 6 weeks. As such, you’re advised against strenuous activities and intercourse for at least 6 weeks. You may also notice some bleeding for the first 48 hours.
